Hacendera at Bienal Climática. Arte, Industria y Territorio

Hacendera (2023) is now on view as part of the exhibition programme of Bienal Climática. Arte, Industria y Territorio, whose first edition, Ensayar lo inesperado, takes place in Avilés from 12 June to 20 September 2026.

Bringing together more than forty artists across thirteen venues, the Bienal Climática is conceived as a meeting place for artistic practices, organisations and citizens to reflect on the challenges of ecological transition. Through art, culture and nature, its programme addresses the relationships between climate, industry and territory, opening up conversations around rural and urban environments, changing forms of production, and possible shared futures.

Hacendera is installed at the Palacio de Valdecarzana, a historic building in the centre of Avilés distinguished by its Renaissance façade. Situated directly behind the arches of the façade, the installation remains visible from the street, allowing the rotating vessels and their continuous movement to be encountered from the public space and extending the work beyond the interior of the exhibition venue.

The installation is composed of a chorus of handmade terracotta vessels rotating on potter’s wheels. Their slight irregularities cause them to rub against one another, transmitting movement through the ensemble while gradually transforming the clay into sound and dust. Through this continuous process of friction, resonance and erosion, the work explores relationships between the making and unmaking of forms, cycles and equilibria.

Its title comes from an old word from the rural context referring to work and time given in service of the commons. In this sense, Hacendera connects the self-regulating cycles of matter with the forms of collective involvement required to sustain them—a dialogue that takes on particular resonance within the Bienal’s exploration of ecology, territory and processes of transformation.
